Metallica's spooky arpeggios

Halloween is coming, and it's time to learn how to play some mysterious and threatening music!

It all starts with a simple question: what do Metallica, the X-files theme, Pink Floyd and many others have in common? They all use the same super-simple music theory trick to create a spooky and dangerous ambience in their music.

In this video I do a rapid analysis of few of Metallica's clean arpeggios, and some songs of other authors, featuring Pink Floyd, Tori Amos, Bela Bartok and of course the X-Files theme! They all use the same trick to create that mysterious sound.

At the end we are going to see how you can use this trick in your music WITHOUT outright copying those songs. Get ready for Halloween:

This is one of those cases where a little music theory goes a LONG way, isn't it?

And if you want to learn more about chords, arpeggios, chord progressions and how to play them on your guitar, check out the harmony course Complete Chord Mastery. What makes this course different than everything else?

  1. It's practical: everything is applied to the guitar fretboard immediately.
  2. It's thorough: everything is explained, nothing is left unsaid, and it goes in depth like other guitar course don't.
  3. It's creative: you will be guided through creative applications of what you learn, so you will be able to write your own music.
