play guitar by ear

Ahh, the good old debate between 'knowing theory' and 'playing by ear'!

On one side you have musicians that protest that they don't know anything about theory (how many times you've heard this line from your favorite musicians?)

On the other side we have musicians that tell you how much theory made their life easier and how much it can make your life easier too.

Now of course you expect me to take the side that theory is an important thing to know. After all both my website and my YT channel are called "Music Theory For Guitar", so it seems logical that I am the side of theory, right?

Well, let me play devil's advocate here.

Let us take the side of 'playing by ear without knowing any theory' and give it a real shot. Is it possible? How can we do it?

So here's how to play guitar by ear:

So this is how we do it by ear.

What about doing it with theory? Well, you have all the rest of this website to check out if you want to learn how music theory for guitar helps you make better music.

But I'm assuming many of you do not know your way around yet... (you really should check out the rest of this website, it's full of goodies....)

... so if you need a place to get started, what about a video on some super-simple chord progression that anybody can play and that make you sound more 'cinematic'? Not really lead guitar

Would you have found these chord progression by ear? I definitely would not have, so I have to thank music theory for this:

Is there more that music theory can do for you? For sure!

Music theory can teach you the way to get a lot of sounds that professionals guitar players are using every day in their music. Sounds that will take more than a lifetime to figure out on your own - but you can learn all of them and use them, and actually spend your lifetime making music - and not wander aimlessly.

If you want to be a more creative guitar player and write better melodies and better solos, then have a look at the Master of the Modes Guitar Course. YES, I know that the last fad is "you don't need to know the modes to make great music"...

... tell you what... it's true! You don't NEED to know the modes to make great music. Just as you don't NEED to have all the 6 strings on your guitar to make great music. Hey, you don't even NEED to be able to hear to make great music (Beethoven anyone?)

But sure being able to hear, having 6 strings on your guitar, and knowing your modes HELPS A LOT in making great music.

So go an check out that Master of the Modes course now, and give it a real shot, eh? Enjoy!
