circle of fifths keys

Do you remember those 80’s high school movies where all the cool, popular kids knew exactly what notes were in any key, but the loser dork characters barely knew the notes in any key other than C major?

(Congratulations dweebs, you know like a third of the alphabet)

(… everyone has seen these movies, right?…)

And everybody wanted - and still wants - to be like those kids! (Or at least I did. And do!).

The leather jackets, slicked back hair, and complete categorical knowledge of the notes in every key, I mean, what couldn’t those kids do?

Well, guess what? I’m going to show you how to satisfy your lifelong desire to be just like the popular kids in all of those incredibly well-known beloved movies that I definitely I did not hallucinate that everyone has seen and remember.

Their secret is that they weren’t just memorizing every note of every key.

When the teacher would ask “what notes are in Bb major?” … and soon-to-be prom king Mr. Popular answers, nonchalantly, “Bb C D Eb F G A”… he wasn’t just reciting something he memorized.

He was using a system that allows him to immediately figure out the notes in any key, without necessarily having them all memorized.

So, what is this system?

It all comes down to the circle of fifths. The circle of fifths can do many things, and one of those things is it provides quite a few ways of quickly identifying the notes of any key.

So while it may be too late to take another shot at being the bad-boy popular kid in high school, if you learn this system now, you might be just in time to make some serious waves at your 40-year high school reunion (Because that’s how long ago you graduated if you went to high school in the 80’s. Yikes!)

Watch this video if you still remember the 80’s If you want to learn all about how the circle of fifths can make learning the keys significantly easier, watch the video linked below:

It does of course make complete sense that if you’re going to learn the notes in every key, you should also learn as much as you can about scales and modes. bBcause that’s the main way you can turn those notes into music!

If you want to learn everything you need to know about scales and modes on the guitar, check out my Master of the Modes guitar course.
