hand size guitar problem

Does size matter?

I'm talking of course about the size of your hands and how that relates to playing guitar, as you probably imagined.

If you ask the majority of people learning the guitar, they will probably all tell you that there's something about their hands that keeps them from being a great guitar player.

Too small, too big, too average, I've heard it all.

But is there any truth to it? Is there a 'best size' for your hands if you want to play guitar?

Well, I have good news and bad news.

  • The bad news is that there is in fact a perfect set of hands for playing the guitar...

  • ... but the good news is that no one has ever or will ever possess them.

The optimal hands for playing guitar have 6 fingers (not including the thumbs; of which there are three. Two on the right hand, one on the left), each finger can bend backwards as easily as it can bend inwards, and can stretch 90 degrees in all directions.

Each finger has four knuckles, all of which are replaced with a rotator ball joint such as the one in your shoulder.

The skin is made of cowhide and contains no nerve endings.

So, when you ask yourself "are my hands even meant to play the guitar"? You can rest assured that the answer is a resounding "no".

Just like it is with every other person on the planet.

The sole reason you think your hands are 'too small' or 'too big' to play the guitar is because you've yet to come to the realization that the human hand was not designed to play the guitar.

It was designed to pick up small to medium sized objects for the general purposes of eating, throwing, swinging, or flailing around in a bohemian display of intimidation and bravado.

But, within the realm of feasible human anatomy, is there an optimal shape and size for a guitar player's hands? Is there a point where hands can actually be too big or too small for the guitar?

In the video linked below, I will explain exactly that.

P.S. If you actually have small hands, consider a 3/4 or short-scale guitar. But also practice to make your hands more flexible!

P.P.S> Once you stop obsessing over whether your hands are the right size to play guitar properly, you should probably start actually learning something! A great place to start is learning the ins and outs of chords and harmony on the guitar. If you want to learn all there is to know about chords, check out my Complete Chord Mastery guitar course
